Well I spent the last 3 days on and off working on getting a new theme for the site. I chose the vSlider theme created by Rui Pereira. This theme is both for WordPress and Gallery2. Past theming has always required me to find themes for WordPress that would also go well with Gallery2. Often there was much buggering to get the two to play nice together. Then there was the work to get them looking got together as well. Rui’s two theme solves those issues.

At present I’ve chosen to stick with the monochrome colour scheme. If you have suggestions for different colour schemes let me know as I’ open other possibilities.

I should also give official credit to NASA as almost all of these images used in the header are from there image archive. Well actually these are pieces of much large NASA images.

Well after weeks of tinkering I’ve got a new home for Faintfuzzies.ca. This required the physical moving of various hard drives, installing my favourite flavour of Linux, Gentoo Linux. The downside of my distro of Linux is it is compile from source code. Yup ever piece of software used in this server must be compiled before it can be used. To get the most out of this distribution I needed to find out all the optimizations that could be applied via the compiling process to take full advantage of 64 bit Xeon, also known as EMT64. This is what Gentoo is all about. Now you will not get huge performance gains, but they’re enough to go to the trouble of using Gentoo. If you want, you can find benchmarking stats on the following, linux.com , and Anantech.com.

Gentoo Linux uses a global make file and 4 other files to achieve the customized install that its users require. The global make file is called make.conf and for my web server it contains the following options:

MAKE.CONF
CFLAGS=”-march=k8 -O2 -pipe”
CXXFLAGS=”${CFLAGS}”
CHOST=”x86_64-pc-linux-gnu”
USE=”-X crypt ctype pcre session unicode PHP apache2 mysql mysqli mmx sse sse2 acpi mmx sse3 3dnowext 3dnow ntpl ntplonly JSON curl jpeg jpeg2k png tiff hdri truetype exif bash-completion mp3 ssse3 xvid encode mmxext gd threads”
APACHE2_MPMS=”worker

AMD Dual Opteron Tower, Old Desktop, New Web Server

The other 4 files that can be used to adjust performance or package choice (software, for you windows users) are: package.keywords, package.use, package.mask, package.unmask. The first file package.keywords allows me to chose software packages from the unstable development branch. Package.use allows me to apply specific USE options to specific software packages. Here are the what is in that file.

PACKAGES.USE
www-servers/apache log_forensic
www-apps/gallery mysql ffmpeg gd imagemagick netpbm raw sqlite unzip zip
dev-lang/php pcre session mysql pdo gd

Old Web Server (IBM Intellistation Dual PIII 500)

Now this is not to be construed as a definitive list of USE Flags possible. But based on the research that I’ve done to date is the best I could come up with that balanced performance against stability.

In order to use WordPress in Gentoo I had to use the file package.keywords. This is what is in this file:

PACKAGE.KEYWORDS
www-apps/wordpress ~amd64
www-apps/gallery ~amd64
sci-misc/boinc ~amd64
dev-perl/JSON ~amd64

Dual AMD Opteron, Awaiting New Hard Drives

The old server will be retired to a good home. It was a great work horse for a long time. But I’ve had many complaints that the web site was getting slow, particularity for those people accessing the photo gallery. Initially I put this down to my Internet connection. Then I did a test mirroring the website on my desktop which at the time was the Dual Opteron. That clearly showed that the problem was not a bandwidth issue. I’m taking my old Dual AMD Opteron desktop and converting to be my new web server. Here is what it looks like as I prepare it for its new like as the web server.

Dell Precision 670 Workstation, My New Desktop

This upgrade was all precipitated by the arrival at my place of work Computer Supplyhouse of some Dell Precision 670. Our store carries all the normal computer items, but also specialized in Off-Lease Government and Corporate leased computers. We also stock a full line of computer books. These where in excellent condition and the price was… well, irresistible. The spec.’s on these bad boys was dual 4.3Ghz EMT64 Xeons, with 80Gb SATA-II drives and 2Gb of DDR2 ECC ram. To this setup I’ve add a 73Gb Seagate Cheetah hard-drive used for the OS, Apache2, Gallery2, and WordPress. The 80Gb hard-drive will house the Gallery2 photos and back-up files.

Web Server With Cooling Fan Hack

The speed difference of the new web server is quite remarkable. This change for the web server means I should be about to get many good years out of it. This is assuming no hardware failures. The one thing to keep on eye on with this computer is that it is quite heat sensitive, well at least in the last few years or so. To mitigate this issue I had a friend of mine cut a hole in the side across from the CPUs and have added a 120mm fan. It was added to the outside as there is no real room to mount the fan inside and still be able to side the side panel off.

You may notice that my Geek Reading page is not working right. That is due to issues with Open Library. The page runs off a plugin called openbook by John Miedema. Not being a fan of social networking sites I decided to try and find another alternative to librarything which is a social networking site for book lovers sorta like Lastfm is a social networking site for music lovers.

So I’m giving this open source wiki book library my space. The downside is I relay on it for data. If it does not work neither does my book list. It has been suggested that I do this in my database as it not a big thing. This is true, but then I would not be contributing to what I thing is a valuable service. Short story long. Geek Reading is not presently function 100%. Bear with me until Open Library get things back up and running.

Oh and if you have a book suggestion for us geek people please don’t hesitate to leave a comment with your title suggestions.

We all know the web is mostly crap. Kinda like this website of mine. Useless drivel. That is until you stumble on to something you couldn’t possibly believed existed. Enter PHOTO OF THE DAY: 1979-1997, 6,697 Polaroids I discovered this while listen to one of my favourite podcasts Spark on the CBC. It is hard to imagine taking a picture a day for 18 years. It is very hard to imagine doing anything every day for 18 years. That is just what Jamie Livingston did, and his friends Hugh Crawford and Betsy Reid put together the original show, and followed this up with a website.

It is not that this site is new. It has been around now for a while. But my finding it via Spark makes it now less important to me or have any less impact. One of the bloggers to first looked this was Chris Higgins of Mental Floss blog, he provide some of the first details of why this site existed.

“Every Day For 18 Years” looks like a normal life, full of friends and family and baseball. As did many I rushed to the end to see why he stopped. I was saddened to see that the taker of these pictures succumbed to cancer. But it was a life lived, a more or less normal life. Through these pictures you see as I and think many of us already know, but might to say. That even normal every day lives are beautiful, even special. This is demonstrated as truth by the constant circle of friends and family. Photographies of the various moments, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings… the milestones that mark and dot all our lives. There are some 6500 pictures more or less and you really get the impact of this mans life. I don’t know how many of the 6500+ photo’s got to me… it was enough that it’ll be a long time before I can forget.

I cheated after the 2 year I jumped to the end. Having seen the end I needed to see all the photos. There was something about seeing a mans death that made me need to see what his live was. It was like pay a debt for that cheating. This man died young, only by see how he lived could I justify looking in on his death.

You know sometimes I really get annoyed. So the interface between WordPress and Gallery is a plugin called WPG2. For this to work with permalinks and the pretty links you need to to have Apache mod_rewriting working. However I just can’t get it to work. When enable mod_rewrite in gallery I’m supposed to get an option you use either PHP PathInfo or Apache mod_rewrite. Why it doing this I don’t know.

So why is this all happening, well I want to use a WordPress & Gallery themes SliderV3. I’ve been working on this issue now for 1 week, lets hope that it well not that another. I’ll keep you up to date.
